Personalized Language Support in a Safe, Flexible Learning Environment

Helping English Language Learners Thrive at Reach Cyber Charter School

Every child deserves the opportunity to learn in an environment where they feel safe, supported, and understood. At Reach Cyber Charter School, our English Language Development (ELD) program helps English Language Learners (ELLs) build language proficiency while succeeding academically and socially.

For many families, the decision to enroll in a cyber charter school begins with a desire for flexibility. For others, it begins with a need for something even more important- a safe place where their children can learn and grow with confidence.

For Ireisha and her three children, Reach Cyber provided both.

Finding a Safe Place to Learn

Ireisha's children, Lordes, a seventh grader; Anibal, a fourth grader; and Isabella, a second grader—have all benefited from Reach Cyber Charter School's personalized approach to education.

The family first enrolled at Reach several years ago before moving to Florida. When they returned to Pennsylvania, they briefly tried a traditional brick-and-mortar school. Unfortunately, the experience was difficult.

"We were looking for a way for our children to learn at home because of bullying issues," Ireisha shared. "My middle son is autistic, and he really struggled. We needed a safe space for them to learn."

Returning to Reach Cyber gave the family exactly that.

Today, all three students are thriving in an environment that prioritizes both academic success and student well-being.

A Non-Bullying Learning Environment

One of the greatest benefits of online learning for many families is the ability to focus on education without the distractions and social pressures that can sometimes exist in traditional school settings.

According to Lordes, Reach Cyber offers something invaluable:

"It's a non-bullying space. I don't have to worry about the stress of schoolwork and being bullied."

Instead, students can focus on learning, building confidence, and connecting with peers through virtual clubs, events, and activities.

Lordes especially enjoys participating in Reach's student clubs, where she has been able to make friends and explore her interests despite learning from home.

Personalized English Language Development Support

Spanish is the primary language spoken in Ireisha's home. Her older children experienced challenges when learning in English-speaking classrooms.

"The older two had the experience of not understanding the language in the classroom because of the language barrier," Ireisha explained.

At Reach Cyber, students receive individualized language support designed to help them succeed in every subject.

"If they don't understand something, the ELD teacher will meet with them and explain what the words mean," she said. "It's been helpful to have someone extra to help them learn the language. They're able to get that support every single day."

This daily support makes a significant difference for students as they develop academic vocabulary, reading comprehension, writing skills, speaking confidence, and listening skills.

How Reach Cyber Identifies and Supports English Language Learners

The process begins during enrollment.

Families complete a Home Language Survey that helps identify students who may benefit from English Language Development services. If another language is spoken at home, Reach Cyber Chart School's ELD team follows up with families to determine the appropriate level of support.

Students who have previous language proficiency records can use those assessments. If records are unavailable, students complete a language screener to determine their English proficiency level.

Reach Cyber currently supports students across elementary, middle, and high school grade levels through personalized ELD services tailored to each student's needs.

Individualized Support for Every Proficiency Level

English learners receive support based on their language proficiency level, which ranges from Levels 1 through 4.

Students participate in annual WIDA ACCESS assessments to measure language growth and progress toward English proficiency. Once students achieve the required proficiency score and demonstrate readiness through teacher feedback, they may exit the ELD program.

Unlike many traditional schools where support may decrease as students progress, Reach Cyber continues providing meaningful assistance throughout a student's language-learning journey.

Elementary School Support

Elementary students participate in small-group ELD instruction and receive individualized assistance with:

  • Classwork
  • Homework
  • Assignments
  • Reading comprehension
  • Vocabulary development
  • Language acquisition

Middle School Support

Middle school students receive dedicated ELD instruction and support within their English Language Arts classes. ELD teachers collaborate closely with classroom teachers to reinforce language skills and academic success.

High School Support

High school students receive a combination of individual and group instruction based on their proficiency level.

Students at the beginning stages of English language acquisition often meet one-on-one with ELD teachers, while more advanced learners participate in group sessions and collaborative instruction embedded within their English coursework.

A Team That Is Always Reachable

One of the qualities Ireisha appreciates most about Reach Cyber is the accessibility of the school's teachers and support staff.

"What we love about Reach is that teachers and all the support staff are really reachable," she said. "When the kids have questions, we can call them. If they're not available right away, they'll schedule a meeting."

This level of responsiveness helps families feel connected and supported throughout their educational journey.

Reach Cyber's ELD specialists work alongside classroom teachers, counselors, Family Mentors, and support staff to ensure students receive the resources they need to succeed.

Language Support for the Whole Family

At Reach Cyber, support extends beyond students.

The school utilizes translation and interpretation services to help families communicate in their preferred language. Families can access translated communications, interpretation services, and multilingual support during meetings and conversations with school staff.

Additional technology tools, including Zoom's live translation and subtitle features, help improve communication between educators, students, and families.

The goal is simple: every family deserves access to information and support in a language they understand.

Learning at a Pace That Works for Every Student

For many English Language Learners, having flexibility is essential.

Students often need additional time to process information, develop vocabulary, and strengthen language skills. Reach Cyber Chart School's flexible learning model allows students to work at a pace that supports their individual growth.

The family has seen firsthand how this flexibility benefits their children.

"It lets them learn at their own pace," Ireisha said.

Combined with daily ELD support, flexible scheduling creates an environment where students can build confidence while achieving academic success.

Helping Every Student Reach Their Potential

At Reach Cyber Charter School, English Language Learners receive more than language instruction- they gain a team of educators dedicated to helping them thrive academically, socially, and personally.

For families seeking a safe, supportive, and flexible learning environment, Reach Cyber offers personalized English Language Development services that meet students where they are and help them reach their goals.

When students feel understood, supported, and empowered, they can focus on what matters most: learning, growing, and reaching their full potential.
